Knowledge and Information Services Branch

The Knowledge and Information Services Branch (KIS) works to increase evidence-informed policy and decision making in government.

To achieve this, KIS supports efforts to integrate policy analysis across government and to build cross government relationships necessary for information, research and data sharing.  KIS is leading the development of an information sharing framework between government and agencies.  In addition, KIS provides unique opportunities for learning and knowledge sharing by establishing partnerships between government, Post Secondary Institutes and research centres, and providing training, workshops, forums and opportunities for student led research.

KIS provides ministries and the broader public sector with numerous services including: scoping reviews, integrated data sets, secure lab facilities, evaluation tools and best practices guides to assist evidence-based policy making. The Bridge, an online tool that supports research, policy-making and practice across the B.C. Public Service, is also a KIS initiative and is featured on SPARK!.

Strategic Privacy and Legislative Services

The Branch, which develops and manages the governance framework for the Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act (FOIPP Act), provides support and leadership to ministries and other public bodies to assist them in complying with the legislation.  It also supports the private sector to comply with the Personal Information Protection Act (PIPA) through the provision of training, tools and advice.

The Branch works to successfully integrate privacy into the business goals of government by developing policy that addresses emerging trends and information management needs.  In addition, the Branch works with other ministries and the broader public sector to promote awareness of best practices in the area of privacy and information sharing.
The Branch also manages the revision process for legislation in the Ministry of Citizens’ Services.
